A new contract for the construction of a photovoltaic carport including car parking infrastructure for the Lech Walesa Airport in Gdansk

Polimex Budownictwo has concluded a contract with Gdansk Airport for the comprehensive implementation of a photovoltaic carport* investment including parking infrastructure today. The cost of the investment is just under 23 million zlotys net. The contract is expected to be completed by mid-2026. The agreement was signed by Tomasz Kloskowski, President of the Gdansk Airport, and Artur Sawicki, Deputy CEO of Polimex Budownictwo.

The aim of the photovoltaic investment is to generate electricity for own needs of the Airport. The planned farm is expected to generate almost 2,700 MWh annually. This is approximately 12% of the electricity demand of the entire Gdansk airport and will contribute to a carbon footprint reduction of approximately 13.5% (compared to 2023). The amount of energy generated by the farm is equivalent to the demand of almost 1,500 residential units, which use around 150 kWh per month on average. We estimate that our installation shall contribute to a reduction of 2 million kilograms of CO2 equivalent.

A new car park with over 900 spaces will be build under the photovoltaic panels. Currently, the airport provides around 4,700 parking spaces, next year there will be another 1,000, and once the car park with the farm is built, there will be a total of around 6,500 parking spaces.

The new project will be carried out at a site covering approximately three hectares, earmarked for the final office buildings of the Airport City Gdansk complex.

While taking care of the environment and in relation to the systematic reduction of the carbon footprint, the Gdańsk Airport introduced zero emissions electric Mercedes vehicles into its fleet. These vehicles cars carry VIP passengers and are also driven by employees of the airport's operations department. In addition, the airport has reduced its electricity consumption by replacing lighting and appliances with more energy-efficient ones. Emissions in the de-icing process have been reduced by changing the tarmac de-icing procedures and using eco-friendly agents. Measures have been implemented to optimise district network heat consumption by using a modified heat and ventilation equipment management system. The quality of rainwater and snowmelt discharged from the airport land into the environment is monitored and improved. The airport manages waste adequately and promotes proper waste segregation by passengers and contractors.

The contractor for the contracted photovoltaic farm and the car park, Polimex Budownictwo, is a Polimex Mostostal Group company. For many years, it has successfully provided comprehensive services in the industrial and general construction sector, building construction and renewable energy installations. Depending on the scale of the project, it operates as a general contractor or in consortia with leading companies in the energy and industrial sectors.
