Opole Power Plant: a historic endavour

Today the foundation act for construction has been signed and the foundation stone has been laid to commemorate the construction of the Opole Power Plant. Polimex-Mostostal SA is the only constructor of the greatest industry investment in Poland of the last 15 years. The contract is worth PLN 11.5 billion gross, of which about 42 percent, or PLN 4.83 billion, is the share of Polimex-Mostostal.

The foundation act for construction was signed, among others, by: the Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz and the Treasury Minister Włodzimierz Karpiński.

- The construction of the two power units at the power plant in Opole is yet another, along with Kozienice, significant contract of Polimex-Mostostal in the strategic energy sector for the company. We are proud of the fact that Polimex-Mostostal materially participates in this historic endeavor – the acting Chairman of the Board of Polimex-Mostostal, Maciej Stańczuk, says. - The power plant will provide electricity to more than 4 million households in Poland.

The works in Opole have been continued since February this year. So far, the works have been related to the organization of the construction site, including the execution of power and sanitary connections. The construction site was also drained.

- Soon, we are starting off with works related to building foundation slabs and we have already started work on the foundations of cooling towers - Wiktor Witwicki clarifies, the Opole Power Plant Project Director.

According to the contract with the employer, the PGE Mining and Conventional Power SA, Block No. 5 will be built within 54 months, while block No. 6 within 62 months.

- As a result of the application of advanced coal combustion technology the units in Opole will be characterized by the highest efficiency of electricity generation (i.e. net efficiency of the units will be at least 45.5 per cent), simultaneously, the average CO2 emissions will be lowers by approx. 20 per cent, as compared to the currently existing power plants in Poland - Maciej Stańczuk says.

Polimex-Mostostal, under the contract, shall perform complex turbine islands, build two cooling towers with a water cooling system. We shall also implement electrical systems including control and measurement instruments and automation. The scope of Polimex-Mostostal will also be to perform external network, track systems and internal roads in the plant. It will also participate in the design work. Turbine generator systems for the new plant will be supplied by Alstom.
