Polimex Mostostal to build new gas-fired power plants in Rybnik and Gryfino
Today, a consortium of companies including: Polimex Mostostal S.A., as the consortium leader, and Siemens Energy have concluded two contracts with PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna for the construction of open-cycle gas units (OCGT) in Rybnik and Gryfino with a capacity of approximately 600 MW each. The value of the contracts together with the 12-year service amounted to approximately PLN 6 billion.
We are witnessing an extremely ambitious investment programme in the Polish energy sector, the largest in our history - the value of investments in nuclear, offshore, gas-fired power plants, energy storage facilities or investments in distribution networks is already counted in the trillions of zlotys. The contracts signed for the construction of two new gas blocks in Rybnik and Gryfino are also an example of a fair energy transition, taking into account the human factor and rebuilding the energy potential of these regions, but also an important element in building the country's energy security. I am satisfied that the national component in the investment projects is already being taken into account so strongly - 100 per cent of the construction and assembly work on these two power plants will be carried out by Polish companies, says Wojciech Balczun, Minister of State Assets.
Signing of the contracts for the construction of the new peak gas-fired power plants in Rybnik and Gryfino is a particularly significant event. This is not just another step in the investment process. This is a strategic decision that strengthens the foundation of Poland's energy security. We need stable, flexible and cost predictable energy. That is why our energy policy is based on pragmatism. We are developing renewable energy sources and preparing the ground for nuclear power, but at the same time we need to provide the system with capacity that can respond quickly, maintain the balance and guarantee continuity of supply. - says Miłosz Motyka, Minister of Energy.
We are opening a new chapter in the development of gas power in Poland. Thanks to the signed agreements, at the beginning of 2030, the PGE Group will have nearly 3.5 GW of installed capacity in gas sources in Rybnik and Gryfino. By this time, a large amount of energy from offshore wind farms will already be available on the national electricity system, and the new gas-fired peaking units in Rybnik and Gryfino - each with a capacity of around 600 MW - will provide additional security at times of peak electricity demand. Their task will be to balance renewable energy sources and respond quickly to sudden changes in system demand,says Dariusz Lubera, President of the Management Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna. - At the same time, these investments will strengthen Poland's energy security and increase the participation of Polish companies in the construction of a modern energy sector. Both projects are also excellent examples of energy transformation and technology transition, while making use of local social and labour capital and existing infrastructure. - adds Dariusz Lubera.
The new units will be located in the immediate vicinity of the existing PGE Gryfino Dolna Odra gas‑steam power plant in Nowy Czarnów with a capacity of 1366 MW (Gryfino municipality) and the PGE Nowy Rybnik gas‑steam power plant under construction in Rybnik with a capacity of 882 MW. Each of the new OCGT peaking power plants will have nearly 50% lower emissions compared to existing 200-300 MW class coal-fired units.

The signing of contracts on this date is an important step forward for Poland's energy future. In December 2025, the gas units in Rybnik and Gryfino were awarded 15-year contracts in the main power market auction, which will take effect from 2030, thus ensuring the expected return on investment.
Design work in Rybnik and Gryfino will begin in March 2026, while construction work will start in May/June 2027. By 2030, the investments will already be producing energy.
